Northwestern GESI

Northwestern University’s Global Engagement Studies Institute teams up with ThinkImpact to provide a truly experiential study abroad program in Africa this summer.

ThinkImpact runs in-country operations and provides a curriculum in social entrepreneurship product development, while GESI provides a rigorous, seven-day Pre-Departure Learning Summit in Chicago where students take two courses taught by Northwestern faculty–one in International Development Theory and one in Community Consulting Practice.

The preparatory coursework also includes historical, political, and cultural information from country experts, language training, team-building exercises, and panels on development topics with specialists from the field (see academics page for further information).

In addition, ThinkImpact-GESI scholars will meet back in Chicago for a three-day Final Reflection Summit after their immersion. GESI participants will share and compare experiences while processing their immersion in a classroom setting. Students will also consider how to respond to the GESI experience by networking with and learning from professionals who are creating social change in a range of fields.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Visit the GESI website for detailed information about the Northwestern application process.
